celebrating 50 YEARS

Since January 2019, The Glass department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie has turned 50 years of age, and will celebrate this with numerous exhibitions, workshops, residencies, lectures, demonstrations and symposia, together with our friends and partners all over Europe.

In the spirit of our anniversary, Het Glazen Huis (BE), PXL-Mad Hasselt (BE), Thomas Bata University (CZ), GASK (CZ), Bezalel University (ISR), Alter Hof Herding - Ernsting Stiftung (DE), Nationaal Glasmuseum Leerdam (NL), Museum van der Togt (NL), Van Tetterode Glas (NL), Vrij Glas (NL), Looiersgracht 60 (NL), Landgoed Anningahof (NL), The Glass Virus, NCAD (IR) and The Gerrit Rietveld Academie will organise various events, emphasising on their past and present connections with the glass department.

Many of these events, including our big ‘celebration extravaganza’ in Amsterdam are still in preparation. To find more information on passed projects and upcoming events, look forward to our updates on this website!

ABOUT

THE LARGE GLASS DEPARTMENT

The Large Glass department offers a material-based study in the fine-arts, encouraging students to experiment and to explore the limits of materiality. Our main focus is the development of the individual artistic position of each student and equipping them with the understanding of the required practical and theoretical expertise of being an artist. With a strong and unique position in the conceptual approach to glass as a sculptural material, defying the traditions of Studio Glass, our students are not sheer glass-artists, but identify with the processes of Fine Arts.

Besides sculpture and drawing, (combinations with) performance, video and installation work are frequent forms of expression. Technique is a tool, not a goal. Basic skills, however, are still taught throughout the study, supporting the students to specialise in one or more techniques or media, if desired. Accompanied by their regular teachers and a changing group of guest lecturers, students have classes in 'Reading and Writing’, philosophy and the basic techniques of glass-making. Prior technical knowledge is not required, and students who complete the programme will graduate with a Bachelors in Art and Design (BA).

Eponym to Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass - originally titled La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même, the first use of glass in conceptual art, we express our affinity with the explorations of glass as part of a broader field of materialisation. As the Glass department has always had a strong autonomous and experimental attitude orientating it towards the fine arts, its renaming seeks to establish its contextual ambitions and give direction to its objectives in form and content.
